    Tese dout., Ciências Agrárias, Universidade do Algarve, 2008The aims of this work were to study bract and flower abscission in Bougainvillea spectabilis ?Killie Campbell? plants, under post-production conditions. The effect of spraying with Silver Thiosulphate (STS) and with Naphtalene Acetic Acid (NAA, at high concentration: 500 mg.l-1), separately or together, was tested on plants exposed or not to exogenous ethylene. Quantification of non-structural carbohydrates in the bracts, leaves and stems, as well as the respiratory rates of these plant organs were assessed. In another stage, the photosynthetic rates of leaves and bracts were determined and the anthesis of the flowers, existing in the interior of each group of bracts, was monitored. In the absence of exogenous ethylene, NAA was enough to reduce CD bract abscission during post-production. If plants were exposed to exogenous ethylene, then the treatment STS+NAA was needed to reduce bract abscission. Pooling together the four post-production treatments, bract abscission was positively correlated with bract+flower dark respiration, and with bract+flower total non-structural carbohydrates. Similary to what was previous found for other plant organs bract+flower respiration seems to be a good early indicator of bract longevity. Plants that presented greater bract longevity (i. e., NAA and STS+NAA treatments) were the ones that had a reduced percentage of opening flowers and whose flowers had shorter period of anthesis. A current knowledge of good practices for the harvest and postharvest handling of fresh horticultural products is fundamental due to their high perishability [1,2].     Edible coatings enriched with essential oils and their compounds for fresh and fresh-cut fruit

    Fresh fruit and vegetables consumption has increased in the past few years due to the enhanced awareness of consumers for healthy food. However, these products are highly perishable, and losses can be of great significance if postharvest correct management is not provided. Fresh-cut products are of increasing importance, since they are presented to the consumer in a state that allows for direct and immediate consumption. However, those products are even more perishable since cutting can induce a series of senescence associated responses to wounding, and are more susceptible to microbial spoilage. Edible coatings, which intend to reduce ripening processes and protect the fruit from water loss and spoilage may be a good way to enhance the shelf life of these products. More recently, the inclusion of additives into these edible coatings to increase their effectiveness, such as essential oils and their constituents with antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, has been reported and patented. © 2012 Bentham Science Publishers

    The effect of nanocoatings enriched with essential oils on ‘Rocha’ pear long storage

    The effect of coating 'Rocha' pears with alginate-based nanoemulsions enriched with lemongrass essential oil (LG) or citral (Cit) was investigated. Fruit were treated with the nanoemulsions: sodium alginate 2% (w/w) + citral 1% (w/w) (Cit1%); sodium alginate 2% (w/w) + citral 2% (w/w) (Cit2%); sodium alginate 2% (w/w) + lemongrass 1.25% (w/w) (LG1.25%); sodium alginate 2% (w/w) + lemongrass 2.5% (w/w) (LG2.5%). Then, fruit were stored at 0 °C and at 95% relative humidity, for six months. Fruit samples were taken after two, four and six months, and then placed at 22 °C. Upon removal and after 7 d shelf-life, fruit were evaluated for colour CIE (L*, h◦), firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), weight loss, electrolytic leakage, microbial growth, symptoms of superficial scald and internal browning. All nanoemulsions had droplets in the nano range <500 nm, showed uniformity of particle size and stable dispersion. Cit-nanoemulsions had lower droplet size and higher stability than LG. No nanoemulsion showed cytotoxicity. Coatings reduced fruit colour evolution and preserved better firmness than control. After shelf-life, better firmness was found in LG-coated fruit. Coatings did not affect SSC and TA. Microbial growth was below the safety limits in all treatments. Fruit treated with LG-nanoemulsions did not show scald symptoms and panelists preferred LG1.25% coated fruit. Cit2% treated fruit showed the highest scald and internal browning symptoms, while LG1.25% did not show any disorders.     Antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of the essential oils from Thymbra capitata and Thymus Species grown in Portugal

    The antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of the essential oils from Thymbra capitata and Thymus species grown in Portugal were evaluated. Thymbra and Thymus essential oils were grouped into two clusters: Cluster I in which carvacrol, thymol, p-cymene, alpha-terpineol, and gamma-terpinene dominated and Cluster II in which thymol and carvacrol were absent and the main constituent was linalool. The ability for scavenging ABTS(center dot+) and peroxyl free radicals as well as for preventing the growth of THP-1 leukemia cells was better in essential oils with the highest contents of thymol and carvacrol.     Refrigeration needs for sustainable preservation of horticultural products

    Fresh horticultural products are highly perishable and need refrigeration for further preservation. Refrigeration needs energy consumption with consequent economical cost and damage for the environment. The objective of the present work was to use efficiently the refrigeration according to the product needs and time for consumption. Salicornia ramosissima and Sarcocornia perennis fresh branch tips, which are used for fresh salads, were stored at 1, 4 and 9 °C for up to 21 days. In both species, fresh tips were of good consumer acceptability for up to 14 days at 9°C. At 1 and 4 °C fresh tips could be stored in good conditions up to 21 days. For efficient use of energy in refrigeration of fresh salicornia and sarcocornia we conclude that if it is to put those products in the market earlier we can use the higher temperature for storage saving energy. Only for further storage we shall use the lower temperatures

    Targeted gene disruption coupled with metabolic screen approach to uncover the LEAFY COTYLEDON1-LIKE4 (L1L4) function in tomato fruit metabolism

    Key message Functional analysis of tomato L1L4 master transcription factor resulted in important metabolic changes affecting tomato fruit quality. Abstract Tomato fruits from mutant lines bearing targeted disruption of the heterotrimeric nuclear transcription factor Y (NF-Y) transcription factor (TF) gene LEAFY-COTYLEDON1-LIKE4 (L1L4, NF-YB6), a master regulator of biosynthesis for seed storage proteins and fatty acids, were evaluated for metabolites content and morphology. Metabolic screens using LC-MS/MS-based analysis and physico-chemical methods in different L1L4 mutants of the fourth generation allowed a comparative assessment of the effects of the TF disruption. Mutagenesis resulted in fruits phenotypically similar to wild-type with subtle shape differences in the distal end protrusion and symmetry. Conversely, mutant fruits from independent lines had significant variation in moisture content, titratable acidity and overall metabolite profiles including oxalic and citric acid, fructose, beta-carotene, total polyphenols and antioxidants. Lines 6, 7 and 9 were the richest in beta-carotene and antioxidant activity, line 4 in ascorbic acid and lines 4 and 8 in succinic acid. The reduced content of the anti-nutrient oxalic acid in several mutant fruits suggests that L1L4 gene may regulate the accumulation of this compound during fruit development. Detailed LC-MS/MS analysis of mutant seeds showed substantial differences in bioactive compounds compared to wild-type seeds. Taken together, the results suggest that the L1L4 TF is a significant regulator of metabolites both in tomato fruit and seeds providing a molecular target for crop improvement. Elucidation of the candidate genes encoding key enzymes in the affected metabolic pathways aimed to facilitate the L1L4 gene network exploration and eventually lead to systems biology approaches in tomato fruit quality.European funded COST ACTION [FA1106

    Antimicrobial activity of different nanocellulose films embedded with thyme, cinnamon, and oregano essential oils for active packaging application on raspberries

    The study focuses on the antimicrobial activity of nanocellulose films (NFC) embedded with thyme, cinnamon, and oregano essential oils for active packaging application. The activity against model pathogenic bacteria was first tested to obtain each oil's minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The tests showed that the surface area of the films and the quantity of essential oil strongly influenced the antimicrobial effect. Then, the different active packaging systems were tested directly on packed raspberries to study their actual commercial packaging conditions. Through 12 days of storage at 1 & DEG;C, it was observed that thyme and oregano essential oils were more effective in maintaining the firmness and reducing the weight loss of the fruits compared to cinnamon essential oil or the control; no significant effect was observed on the other quality parameters that were considered. The essential oils independently proved effective in preventing fungal growth.     Membrane fatty acids and physiological disorders in cold-stored ‘Golden Delicious’ apples treated with 1-MCP and calcium chloride

    The present research intents to study skin fatty acids and physiological disorders developed during cold storage in ‘Golden Delicious’ apples treated with 1-MCP and calcium. Harvested fruits were treated with calcium chloride (Ca), 1-MCP (MCP), Ca + MCP or no treatment (control) and then subjected to cold storage at 0.5 °C for 6 months. Fatty acids’ composition, malondialdehyde (MDA) and the physiological disorders bitter pit (BP), superficial scald and diffuse skin browning (DSB) were measured at harvest and after storage plus 7 days of shelf-life at room temperature ≈22 °C. Palmitic acid decreased and linoleic acid increased over time, while oleic and stearic acids had few changes. Generally, unsaturated/saturated fatty acids and MDA increased over the storage period. Treatment with Ca showed that, at the end of the experiment, the lowest MDA values and the highest unsaturated/saturated fatty acids ratio were mainly due to higher linoleic and lower palmitic acids concentrations, which are coincident with less severe BP. There was no clear correlation between the measured fatty acids (palmitic, linoleic, oleic and stearic), unsaturated-to-saturated fatty acids ratio or MDA with chilling skin physiological disorders.     1-Methylcyclopropene and lemongrass essential oil nanocoatings effect on the preservation of cold stored ‘Rocha’ pear

    The effects of coating 'Rocha' pear with alginate-based nanoemulsions enriched with lemongrass essential oil (LG) was evaluated and compared to the usual 1-MCP treatment. Fruit were treated with 1-MCP (312 nL L-1) or coated with nanoemulsions: sodium alginate 2 % (w/w) + lemongrass essential oil 1.25 % (w/w) (LG 1.25 %) or lemongrass essential oil 2.5 % (w/w) (LG 2.5 %). Then, fruit were stored at 0 degrees C and 90-95 % relative humidity (RH), for eight months. Fruit samples were collected at harvest and after two, four, six and eight months of cold storage, and then transferred to shelf-life at 22 degrees C. Upon removal and after 7 d shelf-life, fruit symptoms of superficial scald and internal browning, ethylene production, color CIE (L*, hue), firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), weight loss, electrolytic leakage (EL), antioxidant activity and fatty acids of pear peel, microbial growth and sensory analyses were evaluated. Coatings and 1-MCP reduced fruit color evolution and preserved better firmness than control. Coatings and 1-MCP did not affect SSC and TA. Treatments did not influence the sensory quality. Microbial growth was within the safety limits in all treatments. Treatments with 1-MCP and LG-nanoemulsions were similarly efficient to reduce superficial scald, nevertheless the LG-nanoemulsions showed higher internal disorders after 8 months of storage and LG 2.5 % had higher decay at the same period, similar to control. 1-MCP treated fruit had the lowest softening rate after shelf-life up to 4 months and LG 2.5 % showed higher weight loss. Also, ethylene production was higher in control and LG 1.25 % up to 6 months plus shelf-life, while after 8 months there was no difference among treatments. This study suggests that 1-MCP is the most efficient for preserving quality of 'Rocha' pear for 8 months, while up to 6 months the best effect is obtained with LG 1.25 % nanocoatings.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
